Pet cats make wonderful apartment pets, especially if you happen to be a cat lover. They don't need a yard to play in, they don't need to be walked daily and in general are very easy, loving pets.

There are, however, some steps you can take to make your home more suitable for your cat.

The Scratching Post

Have an appropriate scratching post for your cat. The simple single scratching posts are often not enough for younger, active cats, as they sometimes need to be able to scratch in different positions. However, a simple scratching post or perhaps no scratching post at all may be appropriate for an elderly cat.

Try to provide a sturdy window perch that gives your cat a good view of the outside world. One of the common pastimes for cats is to watch what is going on outside.

Consider providing a perch in the kitchen and dining area

Many cats enjoy being able to watch what is going on inside the house as well, most notably the dinner table. If you want to reduce the desire for your cat to walk on the dinner table, consider providing it with a perch nearby where it can see the table. Sometimes the scratching post can do double duty if it is one of the taller ones.

Make all of your space available

Whenever possible, leave all of the doors in your home open so your cat can utilize that space.

Provide lots of fun toys

This seems to be more important for active younger cats, but can be helpful with all cats. Keep out some toys that they enjoy playing with while you are away. They don't always have to be the latest, springy, dangling contraption but can be as simple as an old cardboard box they can explore.
